Notable Napa Valley B&Bs Focus on Breakfast

There’s breakfast. Then, there’s breakfast in bed. Then, there’s the crème de la crème, a stay at a bed and breakfast. Fortunately, the North Bay knows how to deliver that crème with a cherry on top.

Plan a weekend (or weekday!) adventure around a gorgeous B&B, and fill up on fine food while you relax, too.

At Calistoga’s Chateau de Vie, guests greet the day with morning coffee and tea service delivered outside their guest room door. When they’re ready for something more, they can order a full, freshly prepared breakfast a la table service. Dishes change with seasonal ingredients, but one favorite classic brings fresh pastry, eggs scrambled with fresh tarragon, triple crème brie and wild mushroom duxelles, and a “wake up” glass of Napa Valley Chardonnay. Dining can be enjoyed on the deck overlooking Mt. St. Helena and acres of Napa Valley’s forests and the resort’s estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. Perhaps you’ll work off that breakfast in the 40-foot heated vineyard lap pool, or simply soak in the garden hot tub. Any time of day, you can enjoy complimentary beverages, and in the afternoon, you’ll receive a private repast of wine and cheese. For an extra treat, book a massage in the garden.

breakfast BLT

Downtown Napa’s Inn on First serves breakfast that, while from an ever-changing menu, always promises to be filling. Some delights include herbed focaccia and eggs with basil aioli, roast rosemary potato with soft baked eggs, and a roasted tomato tart. It’s more like brunch, actually, as chef Jim Gunther whips up feasts such as egg roll omelets with raspberry slaw, quesadillas with house made tortillas and chorizo, or a breakfast BLT with pancetta and rosemary. Chef Gunther is a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, and lets his imagination run wild, for creative plates like chayote squash empanadas, gnocchi in brown butter and herbs and topped in a farm fresh egg, or tomato soup bobbing with grilled cheese croutons. For extras, guests can savor a massage, decorate their rooms with flowers (or rose petals on the bed), and enjoy snacks like cheese and crackers, cookies, cupcakes and truffles.

Aurora Park Cottages, just north of Highway 29 in Calistoga, offers guests a hand-delivered breakfast basket each morning including fresh fruit, pastries, and flaky croissants to coat tummies with a pre-wine tasting layer of protective butter. One of the highlights of breakfast, though, is where you eat it: in the absolute privacy in the individual guest cottages, complete with a luxuriously plush bed, cozy sitting area, breakfast nook, and bath. Private decks invite lingering, too, for taking in the magnificent view of the Palisades mountains and majestic valley oaks.
