We see the celebrity chefs on TV, enjoy top chef cooking in our favorite restaurants, and pore over their recipes in hip magazines and cookbooks.

But how do they get there? What’s the secret to a successful career in a professional kitchen?

It certainly helps to start young, and have a helping hand, such as the Wine County Chefs of Tomorrow program. The Sonoma-based non-profit works with 10 Sonoma County high school culinary arts programs to train students in all aspects of fine dining work, from peeling potatoes, to preparing those potatoes as a delicious meal, to serving that meal.

It takes money to keep that good work going, and so the Sonoma County Lodging Association has put together a benefit, being held Wednesday, April 22 at the Vintners Inn Event Center in Santa Rosa. The 16th Annual Wine Country Chefs of Tomorrow fundraiser starts at 5:30 p.m., with the $85 admission bringing an evening of great food, local wines, and a silent and live auction to support the high school culinary arts program.

Participating schools include Casa Grande, the Ceres Project, Cloverdale, El Molino, Healdsburg, Maria Carrillo, Piner, SonomaValley, TIPS 2 Succeed, and Windsor Vineyard Academy.

More than 100 items will be offered in the auctions, including exotic trips, wine, Wine Country excursions, cooking classes, special dinners, gift baskets and much more.

Details and tickets: 707-837-1928, info@ChefsOfTomorrow.org or chefsoftomorrow.org.

Tip: The Sonoma County Lodging Association encourages everyone to think of their own tomorrow, by hiring a private limo or Town Car for door-to-door driving service.
