Charlie Haden

Jazz – the definition of it can be hard to present in a way that pleases all critics and fans. But one thing is certain, you know it when you hear it whether listening to ragtime, swing, latin jazz, smooth jazz, or any of the other numerous types of jazz. And the best way to sample a feast of Jazz, is to attend a Jazz Festival like the Healdsburg Jazz Festival that takes place from May 31 to June 9, 2013.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival and opening night is already sold out! With performances at indoor and outdoor venues, this year’s festival is sure to impress with the list of performers.

The opening night performance, Dixieland at the Bakery, takes place at Costeaux French Bakery. Saturday and Sunday evenings will honor Charlie Haden – jazz bassist, bandleader, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Grammy award, and NEA Jazz Master. Over 20 jazz musicians including Charlie Haden and his 12 piece Liberation Music Orchestra will join this two night celebration.

A couple of other performances to choose from include:

  • Terry Henry Trio at Dry Creek Kitchen, Monday, June 3
From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., listen to what has been described as “straight-forward jazz” by critics while enjoying the dinner of your choice at Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen restaurant located at Hotel Healdsburg. Reservations strongly recommended.

  • Roger Glenn Latin Jazz Ensemble & Carlitos Medrano y Sabor de Mi Cuba, Tuesday, June 4

  • Roger Glenn

The festival ends Sunday, June 9 with incredible performances at Rodney Strong Vineyards. The Grammy award-winning, Songwriting award-winning, all women a cappella group, Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform at 3 p.m. Their sensationally unique blend of Jazz, Gospel, Blues, and African chanting is a must-see. Also performing at Rodney Strong will be a quartet lead by composer, arranger, and saxophonist, Azar Lawrence. His talent on the saxophone has led him to play with other accomplished musicians such as Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind & Fire, and more.
