The Snowflake Corps de Ballet
On December 17, 2011 Wells Fargo Center for the Arts presents Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker. For 19 years, the Moscow Ballet has shared this traditional story with audiences across the country. Created in 1891 and first performed in the United States in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet, the classic score composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich (Peter) Tchaikovsky features two of Tchaikovsky’s most famous works – the Nutcracker Suite, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Although the music of the Great Russian Nutcracker features flutes, trumpets, trombones, harps, and many more instruments, it is the distinctive sound of the Celesta as the main instrument in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy that audiences remember most.
