Inside the Sebastiani Theater

For over 100 years audiences have been entertained, educated, and inspired by film. Imagine the experience before the technology of sound where live musicians, narrators, and performers created all sound effects. It was 1929 when the industry became dominated by films that included sound. The Sonoma International Film Society celebrates film with the 13th Annual Sonoma International Film Festival on April 15 – 18, 2010. The excitement has been building since last year as we have all anticipated what 2010 would bring! This event features the best Sonoma food and wine, and over 65 films in categories including documentaries, shorts, and features. Films will be showing in four venues all within walking distance of historic Sonoma Plaza. Depending on the type of ticket/pass you purchase, you can take part in film screenings, panel discussions, the Awards Ceremony, Wrap Party, Festival Tribute, and Gala.

For the first time the festival opens with world premiere of a documentary – “Coals to Newcastle.” The film follows the British funk-jazz band, The New Mastersounds, as they bring American funk and jazz to New Orleans from England. The title refers to a British phrase created when Newcastle was known as a major exporter for coal. The New Mastersounds will perform at thte Opening Night celebration.

The festival also includes the first public showing of “The Singularity is Near.” The movie is based on the New York Times Bestseller by Ray Kurzweil about a future for the human race where intelligence and technology redefine what “being a person” means. Ray Kurzweil will lead a panel discussion following the screening.

Other panel discussions include the truth inside Hollywood from industry insiders, the processes involved in making a movie, and the opportunity for filmmakers to present their ideas and receive feedback from industry experts.
