The last thing anyone wants to wonder about when they’re enjoying a great meal in a restaurant is whether an earthquake might rattle the dishes. But this is California, after all, and let’s face it, such things have been known to happen.

Thanks to the just completed renovation of ZuZu in Napa, however, we don’t have to wonder whether a tremor will tumble our tapas plates. Not that there were really any worries, but it’s good to know that the building on Main and 2nd streets has completed a seismic retrofit, rendering the historical building completely stable.

And just in time for ZuZu’s 10th anniversary, too.

Owner Mick Salyer has more to celebrate. The renovation required six weeks to complete, so Salyer and his chefs took the opportunity to revisit Spain and rediscover its renowned tapas and pintxos bars. They studied the food and drink in San Sebastian and Barcelona, where the markets and eateries are considered to be among the greatest in Europe.

As Salyer reminisces now, he and his crew made daily visits to the Mercado, where the stalls were filled with a bounty of seafood, vegetables, and meats including the highly sought-after jamons (hams).

They also visited Rioja and toured the cellars of Roda and Lopez de Heredia, which is the 3rd oldest winery in the region, tracing its roots back to 1877. Then they stopped in at Getaria, which is home to the famous sparkling wine wine called Txakoli, and helped celebrate the Txakoli Festival, when everyone from this small wine region and the neighboring villages lines the streets with bottles and glasses in hand for sharing.

Outside Barcelona, the merry crew toured the cellars of Gramona in Penedas, exploring the Spanish sparkling wine known as Cava. Gramona was founded in 1881 and produces some of the highest rated and cellar aged Cavas in Spain.

In honor of his travels, Salyer has stocked special wines from Lopez de Heredia and Txakoli, offering on the menu as long as the coveted supply lasts.

Pop the cork – it’s time to toast ZuZu’s 10th anniversary, these excellent wines, and sure, no concerns about earthquakes.
