What is global warming?
As the concentrations of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), continue to increase in the atmosphere, the Earth’s temperature continues to climb. CO2 and other air pollution collects in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, and trapping the sun’s heat and causing the planet to warm up. In fact, the eight warmest years on record (since 1850) have all occurred since 1998. According to the U.S. EPA, most of the warming in recent decades is very likely the result of human activities.

What are the causes global warming?
Man-made causes of global warming include, but are not limited to, pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal or oil by power plants or automobiles. Other mand-made causes include the reduction of forest coverage, like cutting down the rain forests and increase of methane producing foo sources such as the reaising of cattle.

What are the effects of global warming?
Human-induced climate change has the potential to alter the frequency and severity of heat and cold waves, storms, floods and droughts. Observed changes caused by global warming include:
– shrinking of glaciers,
– an increase in sea level,
– thawing of permafrost,
– later freezing and earlier break-up of ice on rivers and lakes,
– lengthening of growing seasons,
– and shifts in plant and animal ranges.

These changes can lead to:
– decreased crop yields,
– increased livestock deaths,
– declining air quality in cities,
– increased fresh water demand,
– increases in heat-related mortality, esp. in elderly and infant populations,
– more frequent and heavier precipitation, including floods,
– soil erosion,
– and contamination of fresh water supplies.

How does choosing a hybrid helps reduce CO2 emissions and the effects of global warming?
A gallon of gas weighs between 5.8 and 6.5 lbs, but produces 19.4 lbs of CO2. Therefore, a car that averages 20 miles per gallon will emit about 50 tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
