Project Zin

Certain numbers evoke different thoughts. For example, the number 21 inspires memories of how a 21st birthday was spent. Or, of a retired sports player’s jersey number. Maybe a win or loss at the Blackjack table. For others, the number 21 brings insight as the chromosome which occasionally, instead of containing a pair of chromosomes, produces a third causing Down Syndrome.

This abundance in chromosome 21 is what inspired Sonoma County winemaker Clay Mauritson to aim for 21 wines to represent the best Zinfandels in a project to bring awareness and support to Down Syndrome Association North Bay in an annual event named Project Zin. Now in its fourth year, what originally began as an event spearheaded by Mauritson and renowned Chef Charlie Palmer with 8 wines from 8 wineries, has grown to feature the 21 wines from 21 wineries Mauritson hoped for. The original 8 wineries will participate again this year, along with others including Armida Winery, Quivira Vineyards & Winery, and Sbragia Family Vineyards.

Hotel Healdsburg

The 4th Annual Project Zin takes place on Saturday, August 16th, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at a premier Northern California hotel, Hotel Healdsburg. The event is hosted by Mauritson and Chef Palmer and also includes delicious food pairings created by Chef Palmer and highly-esteemed, local, Sonoma County chefs. Chefs for 2014 will represent numerous Sonoma County restaurants including Dry Creek Kitchen, John Ash & Co., and Zin Restaurant & Wine Bar. A few of the tasty pairings from last year consisted of melt-in-your-mouth smoked tri tip, perfectly cooked meatballs in an outstanding “gravy,” plump beef ravioli, and decadent duck sliders.

This special evening also features a Silent Auction of rare wines, food lots, travel packages, and much more. Last year’s Silent Auction raised over $35,000 with all proceeds benefiting the Down Syndrome Association North Bay.
